My goals for this first race of the season were to hang with the group for as long as I could, go sub 18 min, get a PR on my best time (19:21 2013) (22:06 2012) (24:45 2011), and enjoy the beginning of a new year!  I had a really busy shift at the firehouse that ended on New Year's Eve morning.  I felt sick getting off shift, but still wanted to get in a pre-race ride.  Went to bed and slept horrible on New Year's Eve.  The anticipation of the first race of the season and I could feel the sick cloud coming over me :(  I have put in some good work on the bike for December along with weight training.  I took more of an off season in 2013.  I just started back training a few weeks ago.  I am using Training Peaks for the 2014 season.  Woke up still motivated to race and see what I could do.  I was also using Race Day Boost from Hammer Nutrition for pre-race.

I arrived at 8am and got in a good 30 min warm up on the road this year.  I wasn't feeling great for the trainer and there is a nice neighborhood to warm in.  I rode my Zipp 404’s tubulars and no water bottles/cages.  There is no time to eat or drink in this race.  The speed suit from Voler is awesome!  Perfect for hill climbs like this.  A sag was provided by Pen Velo and they brought everything to the top for us.  We were combined with the 35 + 1,2,3,5’s.
Race started up first climb at a decent pace.  This year I stayed with the group until we reached the second climb.  I just felt like crap, and didn't have it in my legs to keep up with the main group.  I was by myself until I caught up with Manny and Morris from SJBC with around 1K to go.  I was trying to at least PR, but ended up finishing 2nd fastest.  I thought I finished dead last on the course, but ended up finishing 11/21.  I'll settle for that on a sick day.  Started the recovery back in the truck with some Hammer Nutrition Recoverite.  I am still amazed at the power some racers have January 1st each year.  Maybe some year I will train for San Bruno HC as an A race :)

Overall I was super stoked about this race, and being privileged enough to race my bike!

My next race is Snelling Road Race February 20, 2014.
