I'm riding a 2015 Specialized S-Works Tarmac with Ultegra 6800 53/39 11 speed group set with an 11/28 for this race. I have a pair for Race Rim Tubular 46's that are perfect for this race. I am running 25mm tubulars for this race. I follow Hammer Nutrition's Steve Born on many pre-race strategies.
My goals for this race is stay with the group and not waste energy in the back chasing. This course is not your typical 4 corner crit. You can use no brakes coming into each turn if you are in the front or off the back. I wasn't concerned with gaining any time on a racer and all the major teams were in the front protecting their top guys. I don't like racing Crits, so my main concern is to make it to 8 laps to go without being cut and finish. I took the bottle cages off for this race also. It's no longer than 30 minutes average and still really cold in the morning. No time to drink or eat! Go park near the downtown Crit course and warm up there. It's a fun day with a sponsor expo and plenty of restaurants to choose from. You can also ride 1 mile straight down to the TT start from here.
We were down a few racers after yesterday. Some decided not to keep racing and some didn't finish yesterday in order to race today. I got into my position in the back of the peloton and it was smooth for the first few laps. BBC sent a few off the front at times but were always brought back in. Some of the laps were really hard to keep on, but it never lasted for more than a lap. Sometimes the surges were for just sections on the straightaways. Primes were always fast too. I managed to stay upright and no crashes in the field.
Thanks to my wife Katie for cheering me on the sidelines. This is actually a really fun course to race on! Now sometime to relax and wait for my TT start time.
