Well after completing the Wente RR the previous day, I was coming into this race not recovered. As it would play out I couldn't even get my HR above threshold for this short TT. I have been enjoying racing TT's and it's helping me improve in the road races. My Specialized TT bike was all ready to go. I use my Zipp 404s with a Wheelbuilder Aerodisk cover for my rear wheel. Awesome set up for now! I pre-rode this course earlier in the week on my road bike. Good pavement and you can stay in aero position entire time. Rollers going out and a 180 degree turn around that splits the course on the return. My goal was to get sub 30 min. I also decided to enter this Elite 4 race first and then race the 35+ 3/4's. Regardless this would still be great to get some racing in the legs during this build week.
I made sure to get an hour warm up on the trainer. I at least needed that much time to warm up. Legs felt heavy and as soon as I started off on the race I felt tired too. I was going to make the best of this however. I settled in the aero position and rode as hard as I could. It was raining on the back side of the course, but I stayed aero the whole time. On the climbs I used my smaller chain ring and higher cadence. I can usually stay in the big ring, but not today! I couldn't get my HR to elevate into threshold :( On the return leg I felt a lot better coming downhill obviously. I was also now comfortable with the courses sharp turns in the last 2 miles and was able to stay in the aero position the entire time.
I was 00:01:30 off my best time placed last summer. I actually thought that I would place in the top 10 in the E4's. My time last summer would have gotten me a top 10 in the E4's. This year it was flipped. My best time would have gotten me a top 10 in the 35+4's but I was outside that in the E4's.
Next road race will be Berkeley Hills on May 10.
