A Year in Review of the Gilroy BPAC

Here’s a year in review that all Gilroyans should be proud of.  Our City of Gilroy Bicycle Pedestrian Commission has taken part in many aspects for change and advocacy.  For the first time we created a Strategic Plan. It’s our guiding document and changes throughout the year. Contains Logo, Invitation to the Public, Goals, Action Plan, Grants, and Bike/Ped Projects.  It allows new Commissioners to come on board and get caught up before their first meeting.  It’s a great tool for long-term sustainability for the Commission and allows for transparency.   We have created all our written documents you see and don’t utilize City Staff time for these.   They can all be found here.  You can see our annual presentation to Gilroy City Council here.

We have reached out to work with any Boards/Commission/Committee here in the City, we collaborated with the Public Art Committee for bike racks and the Parks/Rec Commission for an Outdoor BMX Track, Dirt and Asphalt Pump Track. Having city email addresses has helped these relationships.  We work closely with Santa Clara County Public Health, Bay Area Ridge Trail Council, Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, VTA, California Strategic Growth Council, and National Complete Streets Coalition.  We found Gilroy citizen Carolyn who now represents Gilroy on VTA’s Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee and reports back to us each month at our regular meetings.  We participated in Santa Clara County’s Lets All Go to The Park Series, Library Bike Fest and their Fix-It Station grand opening, and Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition’s annual Bike to Work Day and Bike to School Day.

We participated in the budget process.  We submitted our top 3 projects and aligned them with City Council’s top 5 Strategic Plan Goals.   The Artistic Bicycle Racks for Downtown were selected and the City will install four of them early next year throughout Historic Downtown Gilroy.  Gary Walton President of the Gilroy Downtown Business Association is donating a Bike Fix It Station and Pinnacle Bank donated funds for an additional artistic bike racks in front of their bank.   We will be doing some public outreach to collect funds for additional artistic bike racks.  If you provide funding for a bike rack you can choose to color and have a 2"x10" plaque attached to the front.  If you are interested please contact me Zachary.Hilton@ci.gilroy.ca.us

We have a monthly award!  It’s a great way to interact with public, recognize those that strive to make Gilroy a better place in regards to Bike/Ped activities. It’s a great tool for recruitment to Commissions. Link to award nomination.

We passed an amendment to our Commission Ordinance so that we could be more effective and have a voice for bike/ped projects, and ensure transportation projects include Complete Streets, which we believe, should be a way of life and not chosen just for specific projects.  This amendment was presented to the City Council on December 4th and will be brought forward with a Staff report in January 2018.

Our Bicycle Parking Guidelines created from the Bicycle Parking Plan for Downtown, is online, and we provided it to City Planning along with each Commission/Committee.  It’s a way for developers to see what we as a Commission look for in bike parking and a way for our Commission to evaluate a project when it comes in front of us for review.  Link to guidelines.

Along with the Downtown Bike Racks project we created a Bicycle Parking Plan for all the Districts in Downtown Gilroy.  This plan included input from the Gilroy Downtown Business Association, City Planning/Engineering, and our Commission.  We have plans for the first on street bicycle corral, which could be planned for bike racks or a bike share program like LimeBike and Ford GoBike.

Thanks to Reid Lerner Architects in Downtown Gilroy we created this map to show the current bike parking opportunities.  We have a planned bicycle map that was created as well.  We currently have 60 bicycle parking spots in Historic Downtown and with all the current unused public spaces we could reach 380 bike parking spots.  The map is one-page document that’s easy to read on a smart phone or print out.  Link to bike map.

Safe Routes to School is close to our hearts. We participate in planning meetings, bike trains, walking school busses, bike/ped surveys around schools, bike rodeos, Walk & Roll Wednesdays. We have asked City Staff to utilize us when providing staff reports on property developments with regards to Safe Routes to School and not solely rely on “how they will drive a car to school” Council direction given on Oct 2 that Gilroy missed out on the SRTS check box from SCCHD annual survey of services.  Council stated that they would like to see more SRTS mentioning in staff reports.

We have come up with strategies to keep the program successful including short-term growth and long term sustainability once SCCPHD grant funding runs out and we create ownership of the SRTS program.  Gilroy will have Measure B funding for bike/ped education and encouragement of approx. $39,000 annually.  We have started the conversation within the City Departments and School District to come together as one for the best ways to allocate these funds.

We advocate continuing the sidewalk 80/20 program and perhaps doing some ongoing public outreach to let everyone know of the program.  Sidewalks are dark and sometime really buckled for the neighborhoods that can access Downtown by walking. We worked with VTA’s BPAC to get 10th St at the train tracks into the Pedestrian Access to Transit Plan. We have remained focused on creating Gilroy as a walkable community.  On sidewalk signs you’ll now see Bike Wrong Way for those bikes riding against traffic.

We are the only City left in Santa Clara County that does not have a green bike lane policy and implement green bike lanes.  We are currently drafting one up for the City.  Buffered bike lanes can be done with striping such as Welburn Ave and protected can happen when parked cars are moved out into the street and the bike lane is between the cars and the curb on busy streets like 1st St. Other physical barriers can be used as well but its more cost effective to utilize parked cars.
We have a seat at the table at the City’s GPAC 2040 and are advocating for Complete Street and Safe Routes to School to be added to the General Plan.  Currently both are City Resolutions.  We are advocating for an Outdoor BMX Track, Dirt Pump Track, and Asphalt Pump Track Working with Parks and Recreation Commission and City Staff to get the wording of these projects into the Parks Master Plans.   We are always looking for similar projects such as the City of Watsonville old skate park that’s being converted into a asphalt pump track to see what works and what doesn’t work.

Donna Taft is our recording secretary and is a liaison for us within the City.  She has been crucial at organizing our agendas, meeting minutes, and ensuring each presentation gets into the online agenda for future reference.  Michael Fisher was the Interim Traffic Engineer and has been crucial in sharing his outside perspective on what works in other City’s and applying it here in Gilroy.  We welcome Gary Heap the City/Traffic Engineer who now sits on our Commission as the Staff Liaison.

I'm riding a 2015 Specialized S-Works Tarmac with Ultegra 6800 53/39 11 speed group set with an 11/28 for this race. I have a pair for Race Rim carbon tubular 32's for this race. I'm wearing my Road Suit from Zaavy Custom Apparel, and my S-Works Prevail II helmet. I follow Hammer Nutrition's Steve Born on many pre-race strategies.  Hammer Nutrition's Fully Charged is on the menu before the race too.  Another great race for the spectators and crowds are all over this race course.

My goals for this race are to get that race bug back!  I haven't raced since Cat's Hill Classic at the end of April when I crashed hard and it took me forever to heal!  Welcome to being 40 says my wife. I got a 25 minute warm up on the rollers and did some quick laps around the parking lot before riding to the start line.  Registration and parking are right on the course.

Usually buy this time of year I'm ready for the intensity of this race.  It's a race of attrition and laps full of climbing.  It's a small field of climbers that I know and they all have been racing this summer.  The best I can do is hold on to as long as I can in the small pack and then chase off the back.  After 3 laps thats exactly what happened.  Overall it felt great to be back and living in the Bay Area where the official racing season ends in September....there are so many informal race series until January 1.  Low Key Hill Climbs, San Jose Bicycle Club Winter Series, and SLO LSD in December.

I've been missing out on writing these race reports too.  I've been on a new adventure as a Commissioner for the City of Gilroy Bicycle Pedestrian Commission (Gilroy BPAC). That's involved a lot of writing for me and I'm glad to be apart of the movement.  I will be racing this Fall/Winter and begin to write up the race reports again.

Time to recover with Hammer Nutrition's Recoverite and get a good night sleep.  Don't forget to recover during your sleep and take some Hammer Whey to boost that HGH.  I've also added Hammer Nutrition's Chromate, and Super Antioxidant to the recovery mix.  Both have great recovery ingredients!

Next race will be San Jose Bicycle Club's Winter Series October 8!

My goals for this race are to continue to try and get my fitness back to wear I need to be this time of year.  The field is stacked with eager Pen Velo riders that are surely to keep the race constantly hard.

I got a 20 minutes warm up on the rollers and did a quick lap around the course before riding to the start line.  Small field all stretched out across the start line and at the gun Pen Velo attacked off the front and we were single file all the way to the hill where it would break up on the hill.  Basically no place to hide!  The 4th lap up the hill I was in the middle of two riders when James Cho from Tesla on my left started to lean into me right as we finished sprinting up the hill...before I had time to shove him off he leaned so hard into me that it threw me into the rider on my right and he took us down...while Tesla rider James Cho rode off.  I hit the back tire luckily as I fell of the rider in front of me.  I pretty much bounced off his tire on my right rib cage and hit the ground unclipped.  I hoped right back up as the moto came up to me and told me if I was OK I could go back to the start and get a restart.  I couldn't catch my breath at all and I actually thought I might have broken some ribs.  Luckily my breathing slowed, bike works, and everyone around me cheering me on to finish the race.  I used a short cut and rode off to the start line.  I restarted and finished the race but it was really hard to breath still.  It helped having my wife, daughter, and good friends cheer me on at the top of the hill till I finished.   Nothing broken and that will only make me stronger.  I usually don;t have to defend myself too much because most of my races aren't that aggressive.  Most back off when they get close and nudge shoulders.  I won't allow that to happen to me again.

I'm riding a 2015 Specialized S-Works Tarmac with Ultegra 6800 53/39 11 speed group set with an 11/32 for this race.  Lot's of climbing in a short amount of time.  I have a pair for Race Rim carbon tubular 32's for this race.  They are light and stiff enough for some 40 mph plus racing and poor roads. I'm wearing my new Road Suit from Zaavy Custom Apparel, and my new S-Works Prevail II helmet. I follow Hammer Nutrition's Steve Born on many pre-race strategies.

My goals for this race are to get some hard intensity in the legs!  I'm not where I should be for this time of year.  I just haven't had the good weather or discipline on the trainer.  Despite all that I need to keep fighting it.  There isn't a big group here either.  That means that it's harder to find guys on the same level as you.  Am I the only one out there that might not be ready for a race but I still support it and show up anyways?

I got a 30 minute warm up and rode to the start line only to find that we weren't starting anytime soon!  Apparently the new race course and number of laps doesn't equal the total mileage....we were delayed for 1 hour!  That doesn't help at all.  I was good for 3 laps on this new course and then I just began to fade out.  I was hungry and my legs were shot.  I was getting discouraged about finishing the final two laps alone and the sun setting too...I opted to DNF and fight another day.  I haven't done this for years but that's what's up right now.  I was getting more excited about coming back for the awesome bike festival with Avery on Sunday.  It's time to drink beer, eat great food, and free swag!

I follow Hammer Nutrition's Steve Born on many pre-race strategies.

My goals for this race are to gain some race course experience for the future while getting some race intensity for the legs.  This winter has just plain sucked for training.  I'm not where I want to be.

I got a 40 minute warm up on the rollers before the race.  There's a good chance that this race will start off fast!  We combined with the 45+ 3/4's but scored separately.  Race starts off and it's pretty mellow for the first two laps.  There are a few attacks off the front but nothing sticks...then Trevor from Mike's Bikes takes a big pull off the front after the far 180 turn.  No one responded and then James from Cyclesport jumped and went with him.  I stayed in the top 3.  That was too early for me to go and match all that power.   We never saw them again!  I wanted to stay and conserve my energy till we come to the final turn and uphill finish.  The moment finally came and we were single file going into the final turn...I was sitting behind a wheel almost all the way back after the turn and I knew that Matthew Johnson was a few bikes behind me.  We cam down the hill single file and left a gap open in the gutter...Matthew was really quiet and accelerated on the right side....I jumped and reacted as he was half way through our group.  So did all the other racers.  We had maybe 200 meters left, and I was sprinting uphill behind someone.  I came around him and noticed Matthew was starting to back off.  I was sprinting too early for the finish line, but I had to react to Matthew.  I ended up maybe a wheel behind Matthew and enough to make the podium.  I loved this race and it was nice that my wife and daughter could come watch too.

What I learned is that it OK to try new things here.  If I was in better shape then maybe I could have stayed away with Trevor and James.  What I did learn is that I need to pay attention to what's going on behind me at the end.  I could have been all the way in the back, but then if the top 2 took off early I'm not sure if I would be able to catch them.

I follow Hammer Nutrition's Steve Born on many pre-race strategies.  This race started early and its a 2.5 hour drive. I started the morning off with coffee and bagel for the drive, and then a hammer gel during the warm-up.

My goals for this race are to stay upfront and dictate the lines we take on the descents.  The roads are bumpy in sections and after the hairpin right turn its a narrow road with twisting descents.  If you are in the back you will need to chase back on, and it's hard to keep an eye on the road and the riders.  You can pass slower and timid racers on the descent.  There is a Velo Promo feed zone and they supply water bottles each lap.  This is a gorgeous course and mainly closed off for us.  It's till a centerline rule in effect.

I got a 20 minutes warm up on the rollers and and riding around the parking lot.  The weather was perfect for this time of year.  I didn't need any base layers.  This race is hard work too.  Pen Velo and CBRE have the most teammates here.  One of the Pen Velo guys is on an upgrade spree, and would eventually solo off the front by himself for 30 miles and take the win!  HAHA.  I won't just leave the report like that.  We started in the neutral roll out and we were on our own...no moto.  I stayed up front around 4th place so I could watch the road conditions.  I knew the rain would have beaten it up even more from last year.  Some big potholes out there, when you are flying 40 miles per hour downhill.  I wanted to dictate the pace as much as I could, while also choosing my own line.  The pace was hard but manageable though the first lap.  I was sitting 3rd down the hairpin turn section and eventually passed the front rider because he kept slowing around some turns.  I've got this downhill section well played.  You can see around each turn and it's mainly a closed course with an invisible center line.   I was making sure to eat a gel every 30 minutes and keep drinking Heed.  We are doing 4 laps and they each slowly start to break me down.  I've never felt like I'm getting stronger in this race.  Maybe its the time of year in my training, or lack of longer rides to this point.  We dropped several riders on the hairpin descent and climbs that followed.  No one took a feed through the 1st time in the feed zone.  Pen Velo's Jarno Rajahalme came to the front of the group as we started the climb on lap 2 right at the cow ranch, and put down a hard acceleration to the top.  I started to feel it in the legs and cardio....I went to the back and stayed on the last guys wheel.   This helped me through the next descent and climb to the hairpin. I wasn't up front for the 2nd hairpin turn and descent.  It was easy to stay in contact with the group, but when we reached the final climb back up to the road to the finish I was cooked.  I had to just go my tempo at this point.  I still have 2 laps to go.  I settled in a moderate chase mode so that I would't get caught from behind either.  I took a feed in lap 2.  Still kept up with my nutrition plan and never cramped up.  Just feeling the matches I burned trying to keep up with a select few riders.  That's one of the biggest gripes I have right now in my age category is the number of riders that won't challenge themselves to tough races like this.  I used to race these races with 50-60, and there were races within races.  That hasn't been the case this season yet.

I'm riding a 2015 Specialized S-Works Tarmac with Ultegra 6800 53/39 11 speed group set with an 11/28 for this race.  I have a pair for Race Rim carbon tubular 46's with 25mm tires for this race.   I am carrying 2 bottles of Hammer Heed with me to the start and 5 Hammer Gels to refuel every 30 minutes.  I've got a S-Works Evade helmet.

My goals for this race are to stay with the front group for as long as possible.  This race is about positioning.  There are some major potholes, and also some 90 degree turns.  I always think its best to be at the front for each these sections.  Nothing really new about the course is noted that I haven't talked about in the past on this blog.  You can look up Snelling form previous years for that info.

We start right near registration and then ride neutral until we reach the course.  We only only had 25 racers to start and  I could have lined up in the back, but I like setting the pace during this part. It's a closed course and you follow the moto.  In past races I've seen racers crash during this part because they are not paying attention and yes sometimes even the neutral ride goes fast and then brakes!  I was up front with two other solo racers as well.   Team Clean Power had the most riders.  Pen Velo, Revs Road, and Pen Velo each had several riders as well.  All those teams are doing well in the standings and I figured they would be controlling the pace.  The first lap was tame.  We all stayed in a group for the majority of it.  Team Clean Power would send a guy sprinting off the front every so often for maybe 10 seconds and then he would stop.  We all got used to this, but still several in the front would chase it down and I would grab a wheel and follow for a free ride.  Lap two was fast and lot's of attacks again my Pen Velo and Team Clean Power.  No one would ever get a way.  Although I think that they were underestimating the coordination of everyone.  I thinking that if one of those strong guys just took off and burned their matches they could actually hurt some of the competition and reduce the group.  However we all stayed together.  I was up front and and leading into most of the turns.  It's just what I like to do in this race.  Some corners you can cut into them and we are going single file, it creates a separation and anxiety with racers in the back, and those that haven't raced this course.  During lap 3 I decided to drop in the back and check out what others were doing. Lap 3 was extremely tame.  We also got neutralized just like last year, but this time there was no break formed.  I was ready for one, but Team Clean Power still wasn't making anything happen.  Lap 3 was a nice break in the back literally!  I continued to focus on my nutrition.  I thought for sure last 4 would have some fire in it early.  While there were several more 10-15 second attacks by Pen Velo and Team Clean, one of them would do anything.  We all were together as we made the left turn to the final stretch before 1K to go.  Now we were all fighting for position to get up front for the final right turn.  I moved up to maybe 10th place as we came around the turn hot!  I followed a wheel in front of me and right around 200 meters to go it was a swarm of riders that took off and came around me too!

What I learned from this race is that positioning is key of course and this race is always a mind game of focus for me.  You constantly need to ay attention to your position and wheel in from of you.  If you hesitate to not constantly move up you could get dropped and it's hard to catch back on.  I've always tried to fit group rides into my training, but timing often doesn't allow it.  I need to make an effort to start doing more closer to home though.

My goals for this race are to practice positioning in the peloton.  This race is going to be a challenge because it's mainly flat, fast, windy, with an uphill finish.  I wanted to take pulls up front and then give everything I have until I blow up.  Practice conserving energy for the right times

We start right near registration and then ride neutral for maybe a mile to the finish line.  We will be doing two laps, or 4 legs of this course.  Two out and two back.  It's a two lane road and center line is enforced.  There is a single cone at each end of the course and you do a 180 degree turn around it.  If you are in the back of the you better be ready to not get dropped as you make it around the cone.  Especially at the one at the finish line.  That one has a tail wind and downhill as you come around it!  We are a small group and that leaves hardly any room to stay protected without looking like the guy that won't take any pulls up front.  No one had a teammate to rely on.  The first 13 miles were pretty easy.  You could feel the tailwind, and we stayed as a group.  No one attacked, and we mostly stayed in either a pace line, or a disorganized group.  I kept to myself for most of it in the back.  On the return from mile 13-26 we hit a pretty hard headwind.  I continued to stay protected, but also took some fried turns at the front.  We were 1K from the finish line and it's uphill.  Some were hitting it pretty hard, and I was able to match it.  It's a little more wind protected in this last 1K also.  I came into the 180 degree turn sitting 6th place.  I could see that a Revs Road racer took the turn fast and was already starting to try and create himself a gap.  I was able to catch the group and stay on the back of it.  It took a few seconds to reach them though.  I also burned some matches!  Mile 26-39 I spent on the back holding on.  Multiple attacks were now going off the front and Rev Road racer was creating a gap on the group that no one could match.  We spent the entire 3rd leg of the race chasing him down.  Finally around mile 36 I started to blow up.  I gave it my all, and that final leg of the race sucked in that headwind alone!  It took me forever from mile 39-52!

What I learned from this race is that positioning is key of course.  I'm struggling to find other lessons learned.

Next race will be Snelling RR on March 4!

I'm riding a 2015 Specialized S-Works Tarmac with Ultegra 6800 53/39 11 speed group set with an 11/28 for this race.  I have a pair for Race Rim carbon tubular 32's with 25mm tires for this race.   I am carrying 2 bottles of Hammer Heed with me to the start and a 2 Hammer Gels (Espresso and Banana).  You could go with one bottle if you wanted to lighten your load.  It's not that hilly of a race though.  The finish line is several miles away from the start.  I like taking the long way home and complete another lap.  I am wearing the Zaavy Custom Speed suit and I've got a S-Works Evade helmet.  No pockets in the speed suit, so I tucked two gels under the power band on my legs.  Fits perfect!

My goals for this race are to get some racing in these legs!  My last race for San Bruno Hill Climb.  This race has some hills to power through, and its on part of the Wente RR course to.

We start around the building from where registration is located.  It's a nuetral start until we all get onto Patterson Pass Rd and get near the first swerve in the road.   Pen Velo has 6 racers, and CBRE has 4. We are on the first gradual climb when the race starts.  It's hard to move up on this road.  Last time I raced this I got too frisky and came around the front on the left side before we made the turn onto Patterson Pass Rd just to be up front.  This group wasn't going anywhere, so I opted to stick it out in the back and be protected.  No attacks were made until the final K.  I was able to pretty much stay at the back for the entire race.  The group would surge on some hills, and then completely back off.  There was never even a counter attack.  I could stay in my tempo and make it back to the group each time.

The group was getting faster by the last lap and we dropped several on the third climb up to the bump.  I was able to stay tucked in and protected.  The final turn onto Patterson Pass Rd was fast...everyone was trying for positions upfront.  I was mid-pack now and feeling to surges.  I was able to stick with the group about half way up the climb.  At this point Pen Velo was launching attacks for just like 10 seconds off the front and everyone was chasing.  At 1K to go the front 5 started to separate, and I tried to follow but didn't have the juice!  I tucked back in and hoped to catch a few before the finish line.  No one passed me up, and I came up a few spots.

What I learned from this race is that positioning is key.  This is a great short course to practice positioning and attacks.  I think that if I train for this race I can podium here.  There's enough climbing that it hurts weaker climbers.  I will be back for the Summer version.
